This is my entry (i managed to resist using all the photo's but left in the essentials) Pirate Name: Akantos Ocean: Sage Assisted by: Dreadfullucy, Fido The ship is a basic Sloop from ingame. The 3 pirates represent myself (akantos), dreadfullucy and fido. This is only the second time i have made gingerbread but i recon it turned out well. The Sail was going to be Fairy floss but it wouldn't work, and i managed to make a gunpowder bag from fairy floss =). Recipe: Ingredients 350g plain flour 1 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 100g butter 175g soft brown sugar 1 egg 4 tbsp Golden Syrup Ingreadients: and Creation: The Dough The Rolling The Cutting The Construction Accesserising Finished back Finished front Prize preference * Ginger(bread) Monkey * Xebec (brown/white): Gingerbread Marlin * Baghlah (brown/white): Gingerbread Snapper Furnshed with: Holiday tree, red ship wheel, green ship wheel, and tap * Dhow (brown/white): Gingerbread Guppy * Chef Outfit (White/white wig, maroon/green apron, green stripy knickers, maroon/green buckle shoes.) * Chocolate (brown) and mint ornament trinket. * Baking furniture set (Potbelly stove, rum jugs, mixing skull, two fancy bar segments, and a sink) ---------------------------------------- Akantos on the Sage A conversation i had when on my sloop with greenies Greenie 1 said "can i ask you a Question?" Dracon on Midnight Here be my gingerbread boat entry: Finished shot 1 Finished shot 2 Finished shot 3 http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/senior_draco/100_0316.jpg Making the dough Cooling the parts Gluing the large pieces together Decorating! Shot of the back M&M booty Tarped back Another work shot Another work shot2 more photos1 more photos2 The string and rubber bands in some shots were just support while the icing was drying- they are not on the finished boat. Its supposed to be a Baghlah with the triangular sails. I have gb for the hull, deck and masts. For the glue and decorations, I used basic royal icing, with other store bought creamy type icings for decoration. The guns are made of those wafer+ chocolate rolls, and the cannonballs are whoppers. Around the deck there are various gummy lifesavers for boat life rings, gummy penguins on the bowsprit, and gummy rum bottles. The red roping is red twizzlers. On the booty chest deck, there are rolos and a cotton candy tarp. The gb booty chest contains yellow m&m?s. The wheel is made of a gb post and chocolate pretzel. There are also lifesavers and chocolate pretzels on the back for decoration. The sails are made of cotton candy too- they would have been large triangular sails, but the cotton candy fought me, so I decided to make them ragged wind torn sails. Since I collect Rudds on midnight, I named this one ?Rudd,? painted on in blue icing. As an added touch, I used blue jello for the ocean with ocean life in it, such as gummy sharks and gummy clownfish swimming around in it?one shark is eating a gb man and another is eating a gummy penguin. Gingerbread recipe- from the old red Betty Crocker cookbook ~ 1970?s ish, pg. 277: 1.5 cups dark molasses( which is usually the whole bottle of molasses) 1 cup packed brown sugar 2/3 cup cold water 1/3 cup shortening - - - - - - 7 cups all-purpose flour* 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground allspice 2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon -decorators frosting->I used royal icing and store bought icings Directly from the book----Mix molasses, brown sugar, water and shortening. Mix in remaining ingredients except frosting. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough ¼ inch thick on floured board. Cut with floured gingerbread cutter or other favorite shaped cutter. Place about 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake until no indentation remains when touched, 10-12 minutes; cool. Decorate with frosting *If using self-rising flour, omit baking soda and salt. I found that I needed to bake the dough for at least 25 minutes for proper boat stiffness. For the royal icing, its just 3 egg whites, ½ teaspoon cream of tartar, and eyeballing the confectioners sugar till it gets thick enough to stand up on its own. I forgot to take an ingredients shot since I had the different ingredients on the counter at different points to making the ship, and some shots you just cant take with an expensive camera and floured hands. Overall this was fun- I had been waiting for this type of event to come along. Even tho I don't have experience making gb houses, I have made gb cookies before, so all the leftover dough went in to the cookies! Prize preference: * Ginger(bread) Monkey * Xebec (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread Rudd * Baghlah (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread Rudd Furnshed with: Holiday tree, red ship wheel, green ship wheel, and tap * Dhow (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread Rudd * Baking furniture set (Potbelly stove, rum jugs, mixing skull, two fancy bar segments, and a sink) * Chef Outfit (White/white wig, maroon/green apron, green stripy knickers, maroon/green buckle shoes.) * Chocolate (brown) and mint ornament trinket. edit forgot the preferred prize list. ---------------------------------------- Dracon, Captain of Revenge of Io on the Midnight Ocean Queen of Deus ex Machina avatar drawn by me ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by draco9 at Dec 13, 2008 10:22:24 PM] |

Pirate: Chipps Ocean: Sage Seeing some of the other entries, I'm sure I've been beaten already, but it was a delicious recipie and really fun to make. Prize Prefence is same as the order on the non-entry page (familiar, boats, etc.) Recipie: (My changes or comments are in parentheses) 5 to 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons powdered ginger 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 cup solid vegetable shortening 1 cup granulated sugar 1 1/4 cups unsulphured molasses* 2 eggs, beaten (*I substituted Karo dark corn syrup here and it worked better than molasses would have.) Preheat oven 375°F. Thoroughly mix flour, baking soda, salt and spices. Melt shortening in large saucepan. Cool slightly. Add sugar, molasses and eggs; mix well. Add four cups of the dry ingredients (you'll have leftovers that you use later) and mix again. Turn mixture onto lightly floured surface. Knead in remaining dry ingredients by hand (This takes about 10-15 minutes if you do it right and you should have 1-2 cups of flour-y spices from earlier). Add a little more flour, if necessary, to make the dough firm. Bake time varies based on size of piece. Side View of Final Another Final View Picture of Ingredients used Construction of the Boat Dough Making <-- This one got a little messed up from adding the cookie later. Dough before Baking Note: I forgot to take the pictures with the card in them so I photoshopped in a gingerbread cookie that I made with the extra gingerbread. ---------------------------------------- ~Chipps on Sage Captain of the crew Crimson Assurance and Lord of the flag Spontaneous Combustion. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 3 times, last edit by Chipps_Sage at Dec 16, 2008 2:29:40 PM] |

Sallymae of Viridian ![]() It's a war brig. Pictures Ingredients Decorations - there's a few I didn't use Pieces ready to bake Pieces cooling Initial decorating - I added ship details in royal icing Assembly More assembly Guns Added masts and festive decorations Making sails - they're made from pastillage Finished 1 Finished 2 Finished 3 Finished 4 I actually did narrow down the pictures a lot. I just took a ton to begin with. Recipes Gingerbread * 1 cup butter at room temperature * 1-3/4 cups brown sugar * 1-1/4 cups white sugar * 2 tablespoons molasses * 6 eggs * 6 cups all-purpose flour (I ended up adding another cup) * 2 teaspoons baking soda * 1 tablespoon ground ginger * 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon * 1 tablespoon allspice * 1/2 tablespoon nutmeg Preheat oven to 325°F degrees. Line several cookie sheets with parchment. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugars. Beat in the molasses and eggs. In another large bowl, sift dry ingredients. Combine mixtures and knead into a smooth ball. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes. On a well-floured surface, roll out a small amount of the dough until it is 1/4 inch thick. Cut to shape and gently transfer to cookie sheets. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until slightly firm. Let cool on racks until firm enough to handle. Set the pieces aside to dry thoroughly overnight. Royal Icing * 3 Tbsp meringue powder * 4 cups sifted confectioners sugar * 1/2 cup warm water Combine and beat on low speed with stand mixer for 7-10 minutes until glossy and soft peaks form. Pastillage - I never used pastillage before, but it was perfect for the sails *1 envelope of plain gelatin *1/2 c water *1 t cream of tartar *5 c powdered sugar (I used more to make it workable) *1 c cornstarch Sift the powdered sugar and cornstarch together. In a small saucepan, place water and cream of tartar in, then sprinkle the plain gelatin over the top. Stir over low heat until dissolved. There may be an amount of cream of tartar that doesn't dissolve, just be sure no amount of gelatin is left undissolved. Remove from heat and add to bowl of stand up mixer, like a Kitchen-Aid. Put on a paddle attachment and with low speed, add in the dry ingredients mixing spoonful by mixing spoonful (couple of tablespoons at a time or so) at a time. When all is incorporated, switch to medium speed until mixture is lightened and very white, about 3 minutes. Remove from bowl, wrap in plastic wrap and let sit for half an hour before rolling out. Can be frozen; place in refrigerator overnight to thaw. Roll out with cornstarch. ---------------------------------------- Sallymae of Viridian |

Well, I'm by no means a professional baker, but with the prizes at stake, I just had to enter. My vision didn't quite come together the way I wanted it to at first, but a new idea came to me today, so it all worked out in the end. Ever wonder what a sunken gingerbread ship might look like? Wonder no more, because unfortunate Patch the gingerbread pirate and his gummy octopus Mister Squishy have gone down with their ship. Not to worry, though, I'm sure Mister Squishy can pull poor Patch to shore. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00062.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00063.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00069.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00071.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00073.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00074.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00076.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00077.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00078.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i243/OutcastHinata/DSC00079.jpg I ended up using a store-bought mix, Robin Hood brand. In it could be found... Enriched wheat flour, sugar, dried molasses, vegetable oil, shortening, skim milk powder, baking powder, propylene glycol mono fatty acid esters, soy flour, wheat starch, spice, salt, colour, corn starch, sodium alginate, soy lecithin, and artificial flavour. The royal icing I had to make myself, with a recipe found on the almighty interwebs. It consisted of icing sugar, cream of tartar, egg whites, and of course, blue food colouring to give it that nice oceany colour. There was also some premade coloured icing, also store-bought, to give Patch his colours, and of course, to give Mister Squishy his eyes. The edibles used to decorate the ship that has fallen into the briny deeps were red shoestring licorice for the sail ropes, candy canes for the rails and masts - broken up, of course, from hitting the rocks as the ship drifted down - white chocolate bark for the sails, a miniture chocolate covered pretzel for the wheel, and, of course, a gummy octopus, whom, as you already know, I have named Mister Squishy. For anyone who wonders where I found him, he was picked up at a local Bulk Barn. If I'm to win the prize for Cobalt, this is my order of preferences, exactly as it was posted in the rules thread: Ginger(bread) Monkey Xebec (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [fishname] Baghlah (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [fishname] Furnshed with: Holiday tree, red ship wheel, green ship wheel, and tap Dhow (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [fishname] Baking furniture set (Potbelly stove, rum jugs, mixing skull, two fancy bar segments, and a sink) Chef Outfit (White/white wig, maroon/green apron, green stripy knickers, maroon/green buckle shoes.) Chocolate (brown) and mint ornament trinket. As the card says, I'm Junan on Cobalt. Looking forward to your judging. ---------------------------------------- <<Junan on Cobalt.>> |

![]() I used a dhow for inspiration, because I really like the shape and detailing on that particular ship. The color scheme came from the Hershey Mint Chocolate Candy Canes I spotted - I loved that they had red, black, and green stripes...so the rest of the candy was selected to fit with those! Ingredients Oops! Forgot to include the margarine! Making dough Rolling and cutting the pieces...the sides were the biggest ones, it's almost the length of my rolling pin! Decorating in progress And over here too All done! It's coming right for us! It did have a lovely triangular sail, really, I swear. Here it is after the top broke but before the rest did. :( From the side Ahoy, Roger Want to see the insides? (All sides are decorated, but the back is open.) I used the King Arthur Construction Gingerbread recipe. It poofed up a bit, which is not usually a problem I have baking at altitude! It's pretty tasty as well...though it does get hard if it's left out for a bit - so if anyone is making this for sampling, I'd recommend trying it not too far after the cookies have cooled sufficiently and again after it gets to the crunchy stage. I like crunchy...but understand it's not for everyone, especially if they're not expecting it! 3/4 cup buttermilk 6 TBS butter or margarine 1 cup brown sugar (I used dark brown sugar, as the recipe didn't specify) 1/2 cup molasses (I like Grandma's, but whatever you like!) 1 large egg 5 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp ginger 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp salt Heat butter in the buttermilk in a saucepan until melted, and remove from heat. Add the brown sugar & molasses to this mixture, then beat in the egg. In a separate bowl, whisk the spices, baking soda, and salt together with 1 cup of the flour. Add this to the wet ingredients and mix until incorporated. Slowly add 1 cup of flour at a time, stir and make sure flour is incorporated before adding more. You should end up with a smooth, but stiff dough. Wrap it in plastic and flatten it out a bit. Then stick it in the fridge to chill for at least half an hour. Once chilled, roll out gingerbread (this takes a bit of muscle!), cut into desired shapes, and bake in a 350F oven for 15-18 minutes or until edges just begin to brown. After taking the sheets out of the oven, let the pieces sit on the sheets for 10 minutes, and use a spatula to loosen them from the bottom of the sheet (I used a silpat and parchment paper on the sheets, so I didn't have to do this step). Allow pieces to finish cooling completely on the sheets. For gluing the ship together: First, I tried the caramelized sugar method. This is scary. And you will find it much easier if you can shanghai someone else into helping you...this stuff sets up really fast! To caramelize sugar, get a small saucepan, put between 1-2 cups of granulated sugar in said saucepan, and get it on the stove at high heat. Make sure you have a heatproof utensil that you can use to stir this. Watch this pan like a hawk. The sugar eventually melts and turns syrupy...once it does, this stuff is like hot glue and you have to move really fast so it doesn't solidify on you so make sure you know your plan and have your pieces ready to go! Dipping the edge of the pieces works well, or you can try using your utensil to apply the sugar to the edge. This is more risky, as this stuff hurts big time if you get it on you. You can put the pan back on the stove if the syrup starts getting too hard to work with. That worked okay, but I didn't dare try getting the deck in place with it, and knew I'd need icing to reinforce and do other things, so here's the standard Royal Icing recipe I used: 3 egg whites (you can use 1/4 cup meringue powder + 1/2 cup cold water instead, especially if you plan on eating the icing) 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 4 cups confectioner's sugar Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until foamy. Gradually add sugar and beat to a frenzy until you get a nice glossy stiff peak. Even though meringue powder is shown in the ingredients picture, I ended up using egg whites instead. For the structural icing, I used a bit of brown food color + a little nutmeg to try to get it to blend in a bit better with the ship...the rest of it I left white. Somewhere along the way, my nametag got scruffy looking, so I redid it in Icing...Then I saw you wanted an oceantag too...so I added that in, hopefully it's okay that it's not in the first few shots! In addition to Icing, List of candy/cookies used in decorating: Dark Chocolate Black Satin Ice Fondant (the lower hull of the ship, applied with watered down corn syrup) CremeSavers Strawberry flavor (the pretty round red & white candies) Gold Dragees (shiny!) Hershey's Chocolate Mint Candy Canes (candy cane edging) Twizzler's Cherry pull-n-peels (the thin red striping) Red Vines Black and Red Licorice Bites (the smaller black & red pieces of twist licorice) Pepperidge Farm Chessmen Cookies - Holiday Edition (the windows and door) Pepperidge Farm Pirouette Cookies, Chocolate Hazelnut (The mast and canopy posts) White Chocolate Candy melts, melted and poured (the canopy and the sail) Green & red flat circle sprinkles (for accenting the wreath on the door) Twix fun size candy bars, cut into thirds (for the steps) As you can see from the above pictures, the sail isn't there in all of them, as it met with an unfortunate accident and shattered. Hopefully the picture I was able to get with it gives you the idea... Prize Preference: Ginger(bread) Monkey Xebec (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [haven't-decided-yet] # Baghlah (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [indecisive] Furnshed with: Holiday tree, red ship wheel, green ship wheel, and tap # Dhow (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [still don't know] # Chocolate (brown) and mint ornament trinket. (heart shaped kind please if there's a choice to make!) # Baking furniture set (Potbelly stove, rum jugs, mixing skull, two fancy bar segments, and a sink) # Chef Outfit (White/white wig, maroon/green apron, green stripy knickers, maroon/green buckle shoes.) And in case you can't read the name card, this entry is for Tamsin of the Midnight Ocean. Thanks for the opportunity to explode a sugar plum fairy in the kitchen! ---------------------------------------- It's gingerbread and we love it. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by Tamsin at Dec 20, 2008 7:08:33 AM] |

Sleepingvamp Sage My Captain Schnivelbiv and I, made a gingerbread dhow, but it is being entered under my account. I ended up using two different mixes. I started with the Limited Edition Betty Crocker Gingerbread mix in the plastic bag. I didn't know how much mix I would need, so I bought two bags. When I went back to the store for more, they were out. I then bought the Betty Crocker Gingerbread Cake and Cookie Mix in the box. Schnivelbiv says he liked the Limited Edition's taste, but I liked the boxed one better, so we have no concurrence there. As of for working with them, the box mix kept its shape better after baking. So if I were to do this again I would either only use the box or make my bread from scratch. I rolled out the dough, cut out the shapes and then before baking, I used a ruler to make lines in the dough for the planks on the side of the ship. I next painted chocolate syrup into lines to make them more noticeable, and then baked the bread. When I finished baking the pieces I put the ship together with royal icing. The decorations consist of royal icing, candy canes, Wonka Everlasting Gobstoppers, Lifesavers (crushed and melted), chocolate covered pretzels, Nestle Signatures Treasures Creamy Caramel, and hippen paste (a thin sweet wafer). I used hippen paste to make the sail, Jolly Roger, and cannons. I melted coconut lifesavers in the oven to make with windows. Crushed lifesavers make the gems in the booty chest (red rubies, green jade and purple amethysts). The cannon balls are purple gobstoppers, and the powder bags are red gobstoppers. The chocolate caramel chests are scattered on the ship. Here are some pictures for reference: http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Image:Dhow_Main_Deck.png (Dhow) http://s492.photobucket.com/albums/rr284/sleepingvamp/?action=view¤t=BioluminesentCrazyFish.jpg (A painted dhow. In the close ups it just wasn't possible to get it in. Recipes: Royal Icing: Ingredients: 4 egg whites 6 cups confectioners' sugar 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar I mixed in the egg whites, 1 cup confectioners' sugar and cream of tartar together with a whisk to begin with. Then I added the remaining sugar one cup at a time. I colored it with gel food coloring. For the brown frosting I used cocoa power. I got the recipe from this site: http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/special/feature/famf199612_ffgingerbread/famf199612_ffgingerbread4.html Hippen Paste: Ingredients: 8 oz all-purpose flour 8 oz powdered sugar 4 1/2 oz egg whites 1 1/2 oz milk I mixed all of the ingredients together with a fork until smooth. I heated the oven to 350F. To make the pieces, I used a thin cardboard stencil that I made. I then lightly greased and floured my cookie sheet. Then spread the batter thinly in the stencil's holes. I cooked my pieces for about 5 min. I didn't do the bake twice part that was done in the site where I got the recipe. I shaped the cannons about a spoon handle. The sails were just the recipe as above. I added cocoa powder to color the cannons and Jolly Roger. I got the recipe from this site: http://blog.josephhall.com/2006_11_01_archive.html Prize order: * Ginger(bread) Monkey * Baghlah (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [fishname] Furnshed with: Holiday tree, red ship wheel, green ship wheel, and tap * Xebec (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [fishname] * Dhow (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [fishname] * Baking furniture set (Potbelly stove, rum jugs, mixing skull, two fancy bar segments, and a sink) * Chocolate (brown) and mint ornament trinket. * Chef Outfit (White/white wig, maroon/green apron, green stripy knickers, maroon/green buckle shoes.) Note for [fishname] I would like in any case "Muffin Sprat". I perfer Gingerbread for the ship name as well. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 4 times, last edit by Sleepingvamp at Dec 21, 2008 1:37:48 AM] |

Pirate: Yetidave Ocean: Midnight My entry: The Baking Of! Recipe here Ingredients here Yeti in the kitchen! Gingerbread- yummy The recipe is from Elyzabeth's Be-Ro book. For those not in the UK, Be-Ro make flour and regularly update their book of recipes first published in 1923. However, we used the local supermarket brand of flour cos we are bad pirates. We don't seem to have any flat tins so I had to bake them in round dishes and cut to shape. The Making Of! Shaping the hull Adding the masts The pieces were cut to shape using a razor-saw (washed first of course). The masts were tubular biscuits held together with copious amounts of icing and the odd cocktail stick. The ship was decorated with icing, liquorice allsorts, and silver balls for cbs. Finished Views Port photo 1 Port photo 2 Starboard photo 1 Starboard photo 2 Bow Stern Deck 1 Deck 2 Deck 3 Inspiration picture The Tasting Of! I have personally checked and tasted each stage of this model. Speaking of which, there are some leftovers that need clearing up..... Prizes As listed, ship name preference Ginger Cat |

Sooo before anything else I'd like to say this was quite the learning experience. =P I set out to do this with my friend Panties of Sage and well....we kind of epically failed. But I thought I would post the end product anyways, because even though the presentation is lacking, I have to give myself points for creativity. Recipe: 3/4 cup butter 1 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup molasses 3 cups flour 1.5 teaspoon of cinnamon .5 teaspoon of cloves 2 teaspoon of baking soda .5 teaspoon of salt 1/3 cup water By the way, I mostly just estimated these. My end product was probably a bit different than this. Okie.... So... Instead of making the gingerbread hard and junk... We made it more cake-ish... Because... Cake is nummier. Anway! For the recipe we used a premade gingerbread mix of the boxed variety by Betty Crocker, water, and eggs. (I really hope you don't need to know what was all in the mix itself because I threw away the box. :x) The ingredients in a nice, orderly fashion. What was on the plate. This is probably the best picture of the ship... After we cut it up and frosted it. With rails and sails. (Haha. That rhymed. x]) And with crow's nest, sea, and fishies. We also took a picture of it without sails. And here's another picture that captures the uhh... Essence... Of the ship better. Though it doesn't have the card...) As you can see, everything started falling off so we were all running around trying to get the final touches on it before it became a disaster... We may have been too late. Oh and my prize order preference is as specified: ? Ginger(bread) Monkey ? Baghlah (brown/white): Gingerbread Nibbler Furnshed with: Holiday tree, red ship wheel, green ship wheel, and tap ? Dhow (brown/white): Gingerbread Nibbler ? Xebec (brown/white): Gingerbread Nibbler ? Chocolate (brown) and mint ornament trinket. ? Gingerbread ingredients Ingredients for decorating. (not all used) Measuring out the ingredients Mixing the dough Cutting the pieces Mast and before 1st collapse Finished - side view Finished - other side Finished Recipes Gingerbread Recipe from www.celebrating-christmas.comIngredients: 1 cup butter, margarine or shortening 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup molasses 5 cups flour 1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon cloves 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/3 to 1/2 cup water Directions: In a large mixing bowl beat butter until softened. Add sugar and beat until fluffy - at least three minutes. Add molasses and beat well. Combine dry ingredients and add to the batter a little at a time, mixing in each addition. You will have to use your hands to work in the last additions. Divide dough into thirds and shape into balls. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for several hours, preferably overnight. Roll out one ball to approximately 3/16 inch thick on a piece of aluminum foil. Dough must be sufficiently chilled before rolling to prevent stickiness. Lightly flour the foil, your hands, and the rolling pin, before rolling to prevent pulling. Or roll between a sheet of foil on the bottom and a sheet of wax paper on top. Position the pattern templates on top of the dough at least 1 inch apart to allow for a little spreading of dough during baking. Carefully cut out the pieces, using a pastry wheel or paring knife, and gingerly lift the scraps away from the cutout shapes, and return them to the refrigerator. If your house calls for texturized wood grain, panels, brick, etc., score these effects into the gingerbread before baking. Carefully slide the foil (with the cutouts on it) onto a cookie sheet. Bake at 375° for 9 to 11 minutes. Bake until just firm, never browned. Once all of the dough as been used, form the scraps into another ball and roll out again. Avoid rolling the dough out more than twice if you plan to eat your gingerbread as it makes the dough tough. When all pieces have finished baking, remove from the oven and allow to cool on the cookie sheets. As soon as the pieces come out of the oven, check the edges and, if necessary, trim with a sharp knife so that the pieces will fit together. Lay the paper template over each piece to be sure the sides are square with those of the template. The dough will have spread somewhat, but the basic shape should be the same. The dough hardens as it cools, making it more difficult to trim later. Allow the gingerbread plenty of time to cool on racks before you begin construction. If you can't start right away, slide the fully cooled pieces onto foil-covered cardboard or back onto the cookie sheets, wrap with foil or plastic wrap, and store flat. Gingerbread will stay reasonably fresh for several days. note: the recipe includes water in the ingredients, but doesn't tell you when to use it. I guessed. :P Almost Buttercream Frosting (Edible for Gingerbread Houses) Ingredients: 1/2 cup white shortening 3-1/2 cups powered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla (use clear vanilla to avoid discoloring frosting) 1/4 teaspoon almond or coconut extract 3-4 tablespoons milk or hot water Food color (optional) Directions: Beat shortening and flavoring for about one minute, then slowly add half of the sugar, mixing in well. Add half of the milk or water and mix well. Gradually beat in the rest of the sugar and just enough milk or water to reach the desired consistency, whether for piping or spreading. Stir in food coloring. note: tastes good, but I do not think it hardens enough for a gingerbread boat Prizes! -Ginger(bread) Monkey - Xebec (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread Spot - Baghlah (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread Spot, Furnshed with: Holiday tree, red ship wheel, green ship wheel, and tap - Dhow (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread Spot - Baking furniture set (Potbelly stove, rum jugs, mixing skull, two fancy bar segments, and a sink) - Chef Outfit (White/white wig, maroon/green apron, green stripy knickers, maroon/green buckle shoes.) - Chocolate (brown) and mint ornament trinket. ---------------------------------------- Maxtrie Captain of The Myrmidons Monarch of Pandora's Box ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by brendbee at Dec 21, 2008 6:46:22 PM] |

Pirate: Redbarbarosa Ocean: Midnight Recipe: 1 ½ cups dark molasses 1 cup packed brown sugar 2/3 cup cold water 1/3 cup shortening 7 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground allspice 2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Mix molasses, brown sugar, water and shortening. Mix in remaining ingredients. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough ¼ inch thick on floured board. Cut with floured gingerbread cutter or other favorite shaped cutter. Place about 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake until no indentation remains when touched, 10 to 12 minutes; cool. Yield: about 2 ½ dozen 2 ½ inch cookies. The inspiration for this ship is an old 1920's fishing ship/private yacht called the "Roseway." The real ship is double-masted, but I didn't have enough gingerbread to make such a big ship (I used part of the original batch to make houses for an activity), so I adjusted it to be a single-mast ship. To make the sides more contoured I bent one of our cookie pans so that the gingerbread would cook in the shape I needed, so I wouldn't have to worry about having a square ship. I got so caught up in the whole process that I forgot to take some pictures of most of the making of the ship (this was a solo project), so there's only a couple of those. Sorry. I've titled this confection creation "Aye, but they're MY dorks!" after an episode of Spongebob Squarepants I saw that had the Flying Dutchman in it. It was a funny episode. ingredients rolling out the dough building the ship finished 1 finished 2 finished 3 final product I used a giant pretzel stick for the mast, fruit rollups for the furled sails, candy-covered kisses for frills, sugar Spongebob and Patrick cake decorations for my pirates, those chocolate swirl thingies for the cannons, milk duds (resized and rolled into balls) for the cannonballs, peppermint ball and twizzler pieces for the helm, marzipan for the hats, gummy sharks for the sharks, blue sprinkles for the water, and mini-peanut butter cups for the wheels of the cannons. Pheonixx Sage Ocean Recipe can be found here: it's from allrecipes.com The ingredients are: Butter, light brown sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, molasses, eggs, a-p flour, baking powder, ginger, and allspice. My tweaks were to add some cinnamon and omit the lemon zest and increase the juice slightly. Ingredients1 Ingredients2 The tubs have the flour and brown sugar in them. We made templates out of sketch paper and used them to form the pieces before we baked them. Cutting Pre-baking To decorate we had a number of supplies, we didn't wind up using them all. People Candy And many others including pretzel sticks, royal icing (which I made), dried fruit, and sugar decorations. For the sails we used rice crispy treats that we made with a LOT of food coloring included. Toothpicks were our saving grace so we could leave the ship intact overnight for the royal icing to dry so we didn't have to hold it the whole time. That picture includes some of our decorations that we made. This is a finished picture of our ship from the front. One side, and the other. Closer detailed view of the top deck. The presents under the sail on the lower deck are starbursts and I made the treasure chest out of a hersheys bar. Queasy Viridian First of all, thank you Tilinka for running this event and for introducing me to an activity which I believe will be an annual event. I think my next structure will have to be decorated only in chocolate and licorice. FINISHED The Seahorse This ship is completely edible except for the foil around the cannons. I exclusively used royal icing to glue things together and for the water. Everything (other than the foil) contains sugar! I figured it took me about 100 hours from start to finish over the last three weeks. Bow-Port Bow-Starboard Stern-Port Stern-Starboard INSPIRATION I am a big fan of the Tintin stories and artwork. The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure feature a ship named the Unicorn which was my inspiration. There is an interesting story here about the model of the Unicorn and model maker who was a friend of Herge's. The Unicorn 1, The unicorn 2, The Unicorn 3. IN PROGRESS Making gingerbread (with honey). This mixture hardens when it cools so I had to keep it over my double boiler. It makes a very strong piece but I was able to bend it when it first came out of the oven. And it tastes great! Making gingerbread (with molasses). This is a more traditional gingerbread. I was even able to roll it into very thin threads which I used for the rigging. This tastes great too! Making the royal icing. It took me a long time to get the hang of using this. I made a real mess of things putting the hull together. Assembly Hull pieces. When the gingerbread came out of the oven, I used the ribs to help curve the hull in order to have three dimentional curves. Coming out of my tiny oven. Yum! I baked the scraps, too. Nom nom nom nom nom. Stern cabin Mostly assembled. Gingerbread pirates complete with pegs and hooks Decorations. I didn't end up using everything. Decorating Pattern Marzipan figurehead, marzipan figurehead Rolling, cutting and baked DETAILS I was thankful that points wouldn't be taken off for no sails. I did manage furled sails though. (I had to!) She calls it 'oven plywood'. I also used regular gingerbread. They both taste so good! Gingerbread (using honey from Ultimate Gingerbread) Deni's Deluxe Dough (follow the link for more complete instructions) I have halved and quartered the recipe with success 6 c all-purpose flour 6 c rye flour 2 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp ground cloves 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 1 tsp salt 2/3 c lemon juice 2 beaten eggs 2 beaten egg yolks 1/2 c unsalted butter 1 1/3 c honey 3 1/3 c white sugar Sift flours and spices. Remove 1 c flour mixture for dusting. Combine lemon juice, eggs. Combine margarine and honey and heat over a double boiler. Add sugar and mix. Add lemon juice and eggs. Add flour mixture a little at a time. Keep this mixture over a double boiler until it can't be mixed easily. Kneed in rest of the flour mixture. Don't let the mixture cool! [I separated the mixtured into balls and rolled those before it cooled. It was impossible to kneed and roll the dough when it cooled.] Bake at 350 degrees for 10 - 15 minutes. Gingerbread (using molasses from Martha Stewart) 6 c all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 c unsalted butter 1 c packed dark-brown sugar 4 tsp ground ginger 4 tsp ground cinnamon 1 1/2 tsp ground cloves 1 tsp finely ground pepper 1 1/2 tsp coarse salt 2 large eggs 1 c unsulfured molasses Sift together flour, baking soda, and baking powder into a large bowl. Mix butter and brown sugar on medium speed until fluffy. Mix in spices and salt, then eggs and molasses. Add flour mixture; mix until just combined. Divide dough into thirds; wrap each in plastic. Refrigerate until cold, about 1 hour. Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick. Refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes. Royal Icing 3 egg whites 1 lb powdered sugar 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 1 tsp vanilla or almond extract Combine all ingredients. Mix until peaks form. Beat at high speed for 7 to 10 minutes. Pirate: Pinlytwo Ocean: Hunter Assisted By: Scoobypirate, Jazzgurly (both of Hunter also) Finally, I had time to post. I took a shot at making a Grand Frig... My first attempt went south to Davy Jones' Locker, :( but I quickly whipped up a new batch and made a smaller version.) The sails, cannons, crows nest, helm, waves, Gingerpirate and Ginger-rat are all made from marzipan. Coloring was created with edible markers. Oh and Jazz's archelon also. Recipe / Ingredients: Gingerbread: 5c flour 1t bk soda 1t salt 2t ground ginger 2t cinnamon 1t nutmeg 1t vanilla extract 1c shortening 1c white gran. sugar 2 eggs 1 1/4c molasses (dark) Royal icing: 4c powdered sugar 1T water 2T cocoa powder Marzipan Edible markers (for coloring marsipan) Food coloring Sift together first 7 ingredients and set aside. Beat together shortening and sugar. Add pre-beaten eggs and molasses and continue beating until incorporated into the sugar mixture. Add 4 cups of the flour mixture and mix well. If you have a large exectric mixer continue to add flour until all is mixed. If not, Scrape flour mixture out of mixing bowl onto counter top and knead in by hand the remaining of the flour mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-12 min. Remove from baking sheet and allow to cool. Jazejaz of Sage Here's my gingerbread Dhow! :D FINISHED: Process: I used a boxed mix- Krusteaz to be exact. For the cookie recipe you add 1/4 cup HOT water, 2 tablespoons All-Purpose Flour, 2 tablespoons melted butter (i added an extra tablespoon of flour to make the dough more workable) to the mix. Mix the water, flour and butter together, then slowly add the boxed mix. Once dough is completely mixed, cover with plastic wrap for 30-60 minutes. Roll out dough, cut out shapes and bake at 375°F on an un-greased cookie sheet. Bake for 6-10 minutes, let cool before removing. Mixing Rolling Layout Cooking and cooling I used homemade royal icing to "glue" everything together. Recipe for icing- 3 tablespoons Meringue Power (dried egg whites), 1 pound confectioners' sugar and 6 tablespoons warm water. Mix sugar and meringue powder together. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Beat for 7-10 minutes, or until smooth. Mixing the icing Building: Starting to build Finished ship-shape Decorating: I made my own fondant (which is used for the pirate's entire outfit, the sail, the flag and crossbones, and the cloth on the poker table). Fondant Recipe- 16 ounces white mini-marshmallows, 2-5 tablespoons water, 2 pounds confectioners' sugar and ½ cup Crisco shortening. Place marshmallows and water in microwavable bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time, until all marshmallows are melted. Grease hands and counter with Crisco. Dump marshmallow mixture on to counter, and add in sugar. Mix until elastically (usually about 8 minutes). Fondant Candy! I used more candy then pictured, including Twizzlers Pull-n-Peels, Sweet's Orange Sticks, pretzel sticks, regular pretzels, Tootsie Rolls, fruit roll-ups and various shaped sprinkles (snowflakes- skull, card suits- on poker table, and candy canes- on tree). Awning Adding the panels Without sails Additional Views: I added blue tissue paper to cover the ugly white board... its not really a part of the ship, just added for a little cleaner presentation. Front view Back view Poker table- something every ship needs :P Christmas tree and cannon balls Man the cannons! Pirate flag *So i may have went a LITTLE picture crazy... but i just couldnt narrow it down any further! Prize order: 1st- Ginger(bread) Monkey 2nd- Xebec (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [clownfish] 3rd- Baghlah (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [zebrafish] Furnished with: Holiday tree, red ship wheel, green ship wheel, and tap 4th- Dhow (brown/white): Ginger/Gingerbread [jellyfish] 5th- Baking furniture set (Potbelly stove, rum jugs, mixing skull, two fancy bar segments, and a sink) 6th- Chef Outfit (White/white wig, maroon/green apron, green stripy knickers, maroon/green buckle shoes.)( female) 7th- Chocolate (brown) and mint ornament trinket. Junglejim - Viridian For the Gingerbread; 3oz Golden Syrup 3oz Butter 3oz Caster Sugar 8oz Plain Flour 2tsp Ground Ginger Drop of Milk *Put syrup, butter and sugar into a saucepan. Heat until melted. Cool while sifting the flour and ginger. Add the melted ingredients and the milk. Knead then roll out. Bake for 12 to 15 mins at 170 fan. For the marzipan; 1 Egg White Drop Almond Flavor 2oz Icing sugar 2oz Caster Sugar 4oz Ground Almonds *Add in the above order, mix together without handling too much. (Both recipes taken from the book 'Classic British Dishes') My images; Ingredients The body of the boat, some of my gingerbread mix and marzipan Making the sail The sail was a bit of a problem, and would have looked better if I had been able to find any boiled sweets, instead I used refresher lollies, which bubbled when they were in the oven. Finished Product: ![]() The cannons are made of marzipan, and everything is held down by marzipan, the whole thing is edible (as my family proved when it was eaten in a few days!) Other images on my photobucket Prizes as they are (although doubt I will win, there are some amazing entries!) ---------------------------------------- Junglejim, Sage - Importance of Being Idle Avatar by Kolibri/Libelle ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JMcKay at Dec 23, 2008 9:45:58 AM] |
