Winners! Huzzah! We're celebrating the holidays with a gastronomically gratuitous, conspicuously crafty, and perniciously piratical cooking-construction project! Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to build a gingerbread ship! So dust off those ship plans, screw on those baking hooks, and show us what you've got! Familiar with gingerbread houses? (If not, take a gander here.) For those of you who had less... sticky... childhoods, a gingerbread house is basically a bunch of gingerbread walls (cookies) cemented together with icing and decorated with all sorts of tasty candy goodies. A gingerbread ship is pretty much the same deal, but instead of a house, you have a hull. With maybe a mast or two. And a figurehead. Ooooh... and sails would be cool!
Rules 1. Everything in the ship must be edible* and fit thematically. Practically speaking, this means you're limited to gingerbread, candy, and icing. If you have any questions about the eligibility of something, please post here. 2. You must bake your own gingerbread. You can use store-bought mixes, but no cementing together bags of gingersnaps or *shudder* graham crackers. *I know this may make certain aspects of the ship (like sails) difficult. We will not hold it against entries if they fail to have sails. Entry Guidelines
Judging
Prizes!* Please specify your preferred prize order, if different, and naming preferences for the ships.
*We retain the right to award honorable mention shinies as we sit bit... er.. see fit. ---------------------------------------- Tilinka, Sage Perilous Puppet Artsy Stuff Avatars <3 spinning! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 9 times, last edit by tilinka at Jan 25, 2009 10:41:33 AM] |

Awesome! Can't wait to see the entries! Chances are I won't make one, as we have to make an entire village at school...nothing like the chef saying "Here's the recipe...please make a batch 60x this." I think I'll be all gingerbreaded out by the time we're done. But we shall see what happens! ---------------------------------------- ~Shannal~ SO Barnacle for Brains Future Queen of Riot if things go my way... Beautiful avatar made by Adida! |

Looks interesting - unfortunately I do not like gingerbread at all so how will I know if the recipe is tasty? I'm certainly not going to eat the stuff. :P I gotta try though - a ginger monkey is my favorite out of all the familiars. ---------------------------------------- Pletoo of Sage is happily rendering Easter eggs - feel free to tweak yer design as often as ye like :) |

Wow I hope my ships deployment schedule doesn't make it impossible for me to make a ship out of gingerbread. Or the fact that Japan is the antithesis of American food. ~Aldeberan of Sage |

Are you considering royal icing to be edible or not? (I only ask since some might think there is a health risk with the egg whites not being cooked but I have yet to get sick doing so ;)) ---------------------------------------- Yearbook, Maddielou, Melinicki Midnight (and sometimes Hunter) SO of Pirates of the Damned Visit Teddy Bauer on Cranberry for all your Indigo & Rag needs. |

Are pretzels allowed? Also, how about cereal? I do see them often on gingerbread houses, but you specified "candy". ---------------------------------------- Greylady on Malachite, Captain, Sweet Dreams Kittyzkatz on Sage, FO, The Lost Lot Grumpygrampz on Sage, FO, Shooting Stars of Sage Avatar by me! |

Pretzels are fine. I've never used cereal before, but I suppose so long as it isn't something silly like those fiber one granules, it's good. I can go with fondant (and royal icing - I don't have problems with egg whites myself, and it's not like your selling it.). I'm not familiar with gum paste, but from a preliminary look, that seems fine. I'd be wary of using them in lieu of candy for decoration - in a battle between fondant and star mints, the star mints win hands down. You do need to use gingerbread cookies for hull, decks, and such. One of the major premises of the gingerbread house (and thus ship) is that it can last for weeks with careful constructive nibbling and patching. Theoretically. Well, I do remember one that lasted for months and months, but that was because my third grade teacher thought it was too pretty and wouldn't let us eat it. Ahh... I would so enter this if I knew how to bake. I'd have to get my grandma to come help me. Now she bakes a mean gingerbread! Can't wait to see all the unique entries. Hopefully I can see some creatism like, how people will make sails. ---- On the other hand, you could even put LEGO people on the ship, 2 year olds eat them... ---------------------------------------- ~ Ravkiki "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will scar me for life!" I have seen some premade gingerbread house making kits, could we use thoughs and provide the brand of it or do we HAVE to make our own ginger bread walls and such for the ship? ---------------------------------------- Mobettagc on Sage Senior Officer of Hic Haec Hook Lord of Good Grief |

Ok, this sounds like entirely too much fun for words... and I've already figured out sails. As crew cook of Merchants of Midnight I've GOT to at least make an effort. I'll be firing up the oven this weekend and dragging out my camera. Good clean messy fun! Whahoo!! Ooh! One tiny question... assuming one can use food coloring as a method of coloring icing, can one also use food coloring in small amounts applied directly to the gingerbread as trim/detailing paint? I seem to remember there being a "no painting" clause in a previous contest and thought I'd better double check before I commit myself to that particular idea for detailing. ---------------------------------------- ~Olliegirl~ Midnight Lurker Merchants of Midnight Crew Cook ~ MUFFINS! |

1. You gotta bake your own gingerbread hull/deck/etc. There are boxed mixes out there for that - I've never used a gingerbread house kit, so I don't know if those come with the cookies already done up for you or if you bake them yourself. Read it very carefully, I want those baking pictures! 2. You are welcome to use food dye to color/paint/whatnot. It's edible and fits with the whole candilicious snack food theme. (Popcorn is also okay.) ---------------------------------------- Tilinka, Sage Perilous Puppet Artsy Stuff Avatars <3 spinning! |

I know its not candy, but can we use edible rice paper? Not as sweet, but you can eat it. Like for decorating, NOT for the actual gingerbread cookie part. If you are not familiar with it, here is the definition from Wiki: Edible rice paper is used for making fresh summer rolls (also called spring rolls) or fried spring rolls in Vietnamese cuisine, where the rice paper is called bánh tráng. Ingredients of the food rice paper include white rice flour, tapioca flour, salt, and water. The tapioca powder makes the rice paper glutinous and smooth. ---------------------------------------- Tearydaze on the Midnight Ocean SO in Skellie Tears Member of Dies Irae Avvie made by Darkfaery |

It doesn't fit in the theme.. Also, if you want sails, and can get the Mast properly made, along with the top attachments... You COULD use very thin strands of Rock Candy + Fairy Floss. If you're really enthusiastic about this project, and are VERY serious... I'll happily assist with your ideas and give you the instructions as to how to make anything you wish to... For a cost.. I am not talking about the easy and cheap methods.. I'd use the full blown over the top edible decoratibe kinda stuff... Stuff you'd see at upper class christmas parties that has a childrens desserts buffet. /e is a Chefy, so can bake :D However, for those who do not currently know how to bake, but wanna give it a crack, I'll assist you as much as I can through the 'puter screen, by explaining things in the most simple of terms.. I'm in game on Malachite as Dazrix most of the time. I haven't decided if I'll enter the competition.. I would NOT be using pre made mixes if I do though... I'll also be using very creative and innovative ideas for even COLOURING my ship to Black/Orange (or something of the sort) to match my crew colours.. I would be basing my model purely off the In game model for sloops. And I'd even Bake in 'Heavenly Demon' and show you not only my Ships name on the side, along with my pirate, but also the ship it's meant to be immitating on Malachite :) ---------------------------------------- Avatar made by Raydric (AKA Unreverse) Waging war with Sage nubs since they became whingers. |

For those who have access to it, you could also consider Pocky for the mast (or so I guess it would work, as it's Cookie stick + Chocolate) /e will not enter, but give advice :D ---------------------------------------- Paluka on Viridian -- Avatar by me :) |

You can damage store bought candy to your heart's content, and it will count. :) (I don't consider that terribly different from molding your own, and that's certainly permissible if you feel like it. Oh man, I need to make toffee!) No on the rice paper, yes (yes YES!) on chocolate. You may certainly provide as many pictures as you want. The numbers in the entry rules are the minimum requirements. I'd love to see more of the process though! I am very much looking forward to seeing what you all come up with. ^^ ---------------------------------------- Tilinka, Sage Perilous Puppet Artsy Stuff Avatars <3 spinning! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by tilinka at Dec 2, 2008 11:56:38 AM] |

Wafer: Erm, it depends on how you're using it. The basic structure (hull and deck) needs to be made out of gingerbread. Marzipan: A-OK! Sugar: same as with wafer. So long as the basic structure (hull and deck) is gingerbreadlicious, you're good. Poured sugar sails are fine. :) ---------------------------------------- Tilinka, Sage Perilous Puppet Artsy Stuff Avatars <3 spinning! |
