I'm not positive, but I believe the answer to your question lies scattered about various posts. But it would be interesting to see a compiled list. I wonder if the Devs could actually turn "a/s/l" into something funny and slightly embarassing to say so that it would immediatly discourage greenies from continuing it. I can't tell you the amount of times I've tried to steer people away from using those five infamous characters in a conversation.

Something like?:

Aye, I laughed heartily indeed the first time I found out about the :P command.

But for the "a/s/l", I was thinking about something more embarassing for those who said it. One idea might be along the lines of "Ahoy! I be a very nosey swab who is looking for someone of the right place o' port, gender persuasion, and years to fill the gap in my life where the sheep use to be". That would sure get some of them to stop, har har. Any other ideas would be interesting.

But we'd just have to keep in mind that if a greenie would say such a thing, we'd all 'ave a good laugh and then kindly advise the greenie to change his ways to become a true pirate among those of tha piratey profession. Kindness to greenies is a far higher and nobler goal than bashing.

Cheers!

P.S. Slummock mate, I think it be yer signature tha be scarin' them away, har har! To which half circle do ye belong to, I wonder.

Along the lines of what darkdragoon was saying, I'd thought of this:

Greenie picks his/her nose while saying, "Ahoy! Where d'ye hail from, and (etc.)"

Of course, some people will think this is cool...

As for the translated shortcuts, there's also "brb", which expands to "be right back."

I count 5 characters...

two /
one a
one s
one l
5 chars :D

Seriously, though, I like the idea. It's only happened to me a few times in 3+ months...so I guess it's not too bad. But I don't hang around the docks very frequently, so that may be why I don't see it much.

I guess I wouldn't mind seeing "ty" and "np" also...but all of this is secondary in my eyes to colonization :D

Edit: Woah! There are a lot! a/s/l wasn't filtered as of a patch or two ago. Nifty! Here's what I've found so far:

:} =} 8} :-} =-} 8-}
:> => 8> :-> =-> 8->

:( =( 8( :-( =-( 8-(
:[ =[ 8[ :-[ =-[ 8-[ frowns
:{ ={ 8{ :-{ =-{ 8-{
:< =< 8< :-< =-< 8-<

:p =p 8p :-p =-p 8-p sticks out a tongue

;) winks
lol laughs
rofl laughs uncontrollably
lmao laughs hearitly
brb Be right back
gg Good game
asl a/s/l as/l a/sl Ahoy! From which port do ye
hail, and how many years are
upon ye? (trailing characters

Unfortunately, the new chat modes work like tells - you can't 'Officer Emote'.

For some reason, this extends to all the replacements, which may be why it took me so long to notice a/s/l - if a greenie is randomly talking to people, it's usually in a /tell.

I want filters and emotes on all modes of chat, personally. It just doesn't feel right to have /me show up.

:) =) 8) :-) =-) 8-)
:] =] 8] :-] =-] 8-] smiles
:} =} 8} :-} =-} 8-}
:> => 8> :-> =-> 8->

:( =( 8( :-( =-( 8-(
:[ =[ 8[ :-[ =-[ 8-[ frowns
:{ ={ 8{ :-{ =-{ 8-{
:< =< 8< :-< =-< 8-<

Let's see what I can make out of this:

:( =( 8( :-( and 8-(, and the following lines should all be 'pouts'
>:( should be 'frowns', and >:/ should be 'scowls'
:D and associated smileys would be great as 'grins'
>:) and associated smileys should be 'smiles evilly' with >:D as 'grins evilly'
8) 8-) 8D and 8-D should be 'swaggers'
;p should be 'playfully sticks out a tongue'
:s should be 'looks confused'
:$ should be 'goes bright red'
:/ should be 'looks thoughtful'
:o should be 'is shocked'
I-' should be 'is wearing a monocle' (or however you spell that word :) )

heh, i actualy thought a greenie last night was typing "ahoy! which port do you hail from...ect" until i read that

"gl" should come out as "good luck"

i say the more the better with this type of thing. you don't have to remember and use em if you don't want to and you should be able to emote fast.

>:) and associated smileys should be 'smiles evilly' with >:D as 'grins evilly'

wickedly rather than evilly. and the word "flabbergasted" doesnt get used enough.

Please excuse me oversized bump, but I didn't want to start a new thread after I searched on and off for three days. Boy, you don't put in just the right search term, you get some really off topic stuff.

Anyway, here is my question..
I know that :p and variants give me "Calicojack sticks out a tongue.", but I only have the one tongue (as far as I know...).
Now I have seen female crew mates get a "Lady Pain in the Butt sticks out her tongue."

Is this a female player trait?, or is there just another combination I haven't tried.
I have stood on me ship sticking out "A" tongue for way to long trying different combinations to stick out "his" tongue.

(yes, I may need to rework my priorities, but dangit, it has become a grudge thing now. I refuse to ask the offender how they do it. They just laugh and then she sticks out "her" tongue again. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa)

Thanks
I'll be on me ship, looking into the reflection of me sword, trying to get this right. :D
