https://www.aspera.com/en/blog/oracle-will-charge-for-java-starting-in-2019/ The current version of Java - Java SE 9 as well as Java SE 8 - is free and available for redistribution for general purpose computing. Java SE continues to be available under the Oracle Binary Code License (BCL) free of charge. I didn't really understand what that means, whether if a business like PP written in Java can still be run free or not, but if not, we all know what that means.. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by army545 at Oct 29, 2018 2:25:54 PM] |

https://itnext.io/java-is-still-free-c02aef8c9e04 I am no licencing expert, but from what I have read and researched doesn't seem like the end, a few changes for commercial users, and if I had to subscribe for 20 annual fee wouldn't be the end of the game for me. Any GH employees break this down? how about some pirates with licencing knowledge? ---------------------------------------- Filthyjake all oceans (Obsidian Primary) Filthyjake6145 (discord) ?Retired? It clearly states though, that profitable companies should pay for license. Puzzle pirates is not considered non-profit, because of subscription/dubs. |

Grey Havens is a nonprofit organization Just because they sell items doesn't make them a for profit business. GH is a nonprofit according to them and likely have the proper paperwork for claiming the non profit status. Other Huge Non profits that get money, Church's Political Campaigns, YMCA (gym sells memberships), ---------------------------------------- Filthyjake all oceans (Obsidian Primary) Filthyjake6145 (discord) ?Retired? I'm not fully informed on the situation (So I don't know what kind of filing status GH uses), but making a profit does not preclude a company from taking advantage of a not-for-profit status (Which is what Oracle would be looking at in regards to this topic). |

Java doesn't require a license - it's the support from Oracle for the Oracle JDK that does. OpenJDK is more or less the same thing, maintained by Oracle engineers, and is under an open-source license. The Oracle JDK on the other hand is targeted at big businesses, probably using old systems, and it's those that Oracle are looking to take license fees from. Further more, the way I understand it, this is largely for end-of-life support on previous versions of Java. This should in no way effect Grey Havens so long as they're not relying on old versions of Java to be updated. ---------------------------------------- Avatar by Velternal |
