My friends are going to compete. =]. Anyway... Outside of these "olympic events" will these tournaent things still happen? And if they do, will they be able to be hosted by non-oms? Or will they always be automated? ---------------------------------------- The one and only me. |

Currently the plan is that only OMs will be able to run the Puzzle Competitions, if you'd like to be able to do this also I'd recommend starting a thread in Game Design! (Assuming there isn't one already, anyway) |

To preempt such a thread, I'd like to see OMs have a monopoly, at least for the first few months, for three reasons. One is balance, because I can see everybody and their rat trying this new feature already if it gets enabled for them. After the Summer Games, the OMs can experiment with the right balance. The second is complexity. It seems like the events have the potential to be quite complex, so it is clearly undesirable for them to be set up in a booched fashion. Finally, this seems like something which would be fun for OMs to do, within reason, with random goodies at random times. I can imagine its fun to be Santa! (I mean Zeus, but hey, big white fluffy beard). I'm sure we'll try to enter a few times from the Dutch meet! ---------------------------------------- http://tinyurl.com/delft2010 register mates! |

There's also the important fact that the competition shows up for everyone on their ahoy panel. If it just appeared on the tournament board, it wouldn't be an issue to let anyone make these as they pleased. As it is, the only situation it seems right for a player to make a competition is for an OM supported event. ---------------------------------------- Romtu on... Malachite! So, who gets to run in the relay to light a big torch at the OOO office? Would San Fransisco's fire code allow an actual fire or would we have to pretend with a flashlight? And finally, is it too much to hope that the shipwright, sailing, and alchemistry competitions will actually mesh with my schedule? ---------------------------------------- A Ghyslaine and a Rhodin for every Ocean, but mostly on Viridian. Does "awarded by category" mean awarded to top Incred/Excellent/Good/Fine? If so, do you have a rough idea of what the prizes will be yet, and is there any chance you'll give us some info on them ahead of time? The obvious concern is about balancing the prizes. How do ye plan to balance them so as not to tick off those who would have won something if they puzzles a little bit worse? ---------------------------------------- Cire Good Omens, Riot

Hmm, I hope not. It seems that the prizes for these events may be slightly large-ish as it was also announced in the, well, announcement section of the forums, and I'd hate so many players' first time to be with such high stakes. I mean, I'm sure it's fairly simple, but eh... ---------------------------------------- Faldrok. That is all. |

I mostly think it would be a very bad idea to have them with such (presumably) high stakes before they've ever been tested on the production oceans. We all know how many bugs sneak past Ice testing, especially when that testing went on for what, a week? (In other words I just really really wanna try competitions NOW and this seems like a plausible reason for you to let me) ---------------------------------------- Do not send me random tells. Isn't this a broken system because its pretty clear that the losers in the Incredible category did better than the winner in the excellent category. Of course we all agree its in the spirit of the game for even those to win who aren't the best puzzlers. But noone can disagree that a lot of greenies will be pouting their lips squealing, "Me got excelend so y the pirate with good got prize?" EDIT: My greenish is a bit rusty. ---------------------------------------- Benzene265 said

This is supposed to be the Olympics though, not a bribe to take a station. The prizes should go to the top three, even if they are all increds. I swear right now that if I get to participate in this and make top Excellent (or God forbid, Good) and get a prize, I will trade it to the 2nd-place incred. You guys might not want to do it right, but I will. ---------------------------------------- A Ghyslaine and a Rhodin for every Ocean, but mostly on Viridian. If the competition is set to be by category and it's one I know I can't win, I'm just going to log on an alt to compete and have my score fluctuate as much as possible so that I can shoot for a gimp prize. ---------------------------------------- Romtu on... Don`t these two statements contradict with eachother. The festival of piracy with competitions would suggest that there will only be events for piracy puzzles, while the next part of the sentence suggests that there will be competitions for all puzzles. In the second case, do you actually mean competions for say swordfighting or do you mean tournaments? ---------------------------------------- Karuru Senior officer of "Dogs of war" Member of Cry Havoc Buying treasure chests/piles |

I'm all for the summer games, I've been wondering lately what happened to OCL. I appreciate the attempt so don't take the following personally, I know the team are trying to improve the game how they think best. I just don't personally like the direction things are headed so forgive me my little complaint, before you ask who knows maybe I will stop playing since I don't like it? ;) Prizes for top excellent, good and fine? At least they seem to have had the decency to take down the "Achievements based on actual puzzling skill!" line. ---------------------------------------- Radders My Little Pony-tar by the amazing Shortyjack |

First, I want to make it clear that I *REALLY* like the fact that OOO has dedicated the time to develop automated bake-offs. That said, I have a *lot* of concerns about these automated bake-offs and I think a great deal more testing needs to be done. For example, from the official puzzle competition documentation: "You may 'enter' the competition as many or as few times as you wish by puzzling for one league or puzzling the entire time for the duration of the competition." This screams "I'll enter a couple dozen alts, each puzzling once, hoping I get a good board." Also, since the duty reports are relative to how other players are doing right now on the ocean, the cut-off between the top "good" and the bottom "excellent" is not fixed. Regular bake-offs often have only a few incredibles, even though many pirates are performing at a level that would normally make an incredible. I'm afraid that people might try to change things by using alts to booch and such. What worries me is this competition looks like it is going to be "who figures out how to game the bake-off system the best" rather than "who can do the puzzles". ---------------------------------------- Algol can not assert the truth of all statements in this post and still be consistent. |

If prizes are alloted to top of each, Incred Exell, good, fine, booched, etc. you may as well have a simple lottery. Said even as someone that likely stands no chance of being top incred. It makes no sense to award prizes to anything but the top so many performances. Nor if themed as 'olympic' has it any relationship to the olympic ideal of winning the events. |

Actually the only way to game the competitions when they are set to give prizes to the best 4 instead of to the various levels is if the puzzle itself is gameable for score. I've yet to see any vulnerabilities in these contests that wouldn't already exist within the puzzle. Sure you can enter as many times as you want, but that wont do you any good if you aren't able to score very high. Basically, rather than taking an average score for the contest it takes the highest score you get as your entry (from which I presume for multiple competition scores its the sum of the highest scores in each puzzle added together or something). I don't see what having alts gains you at all really, especially for the non gunning duty puzzles where it's difficult to tell whether a board will be good or not. ---------------------------------------- Shogia SO of Reality on Viridian Shogia on Midnight, Opal, and Hunter Shardsofice on Sage and Cobalt |

I don't like the concept of how prizes are given out. If they are distributed to the most Incredible, Excellent, Good and Fine then the second most incredible (A) would lose out on the prize where the most excellent (B) would win a prize. B who didn't puzzle as good as A would get a prize where A misses out. I've probably explained this in a poor way but I'm sure you get the gist. ---------------------------------------- Guppyzra of the Hunter Ocean Don't forget her... Like I said in the Ice thread, the problem is that anyone who will never be top incredible but also likely won't drop below incredible has a MUCH lower chance of winning anything than someone who just sucks. That's not fair to them, and there are quite a few people like that. ---------------------------------------- Romtu on... Malachite! You might find me in other oceans stealing your families though. |

Many of the puzzles are gameable. When all this means is you get to be on the ult list, I don't much care, but if these bake-offs are going to be used to give out things like familiars, it becomes a little more important to me. There are reasons why the old-style bake-offs had rules about you having to stay on station, you could hope off, but you had to get back on quickly. They were all run on the same ship, which PvP'ed another ship immediately, giving a uniform controlled environment. One of the complaints was the 10-20 minutes of puzzling was too short because it really doesn't measure your skill over a variety of boards and such, there was too much luck These automated things, however, are even worse since you only have to show up on one duty report. The shop puzzle bake-offs required you to start with a fresh novice/able alt and the first one to reach leg won. There were a whole lot of rules/procedures in the old bake-offs that were put in and adjusted to reduce problems. These new automated bake-offs throw most of those things out and are only lightly tested. ---------------------------------------- Algol can not assert the truth of all statements in this post and still be consistent. |
