Ahoy,
ScenePainter is a third party application for puzzlepirates (and other games
based on three rings media library), that allows you to access the ingame
graphics for doodeling pictures or previewing your next latest fashion
outfit without having to actually pay a single poe for it.

You can download ScenePainter here:
http://www.home.unix-ag.org/patrick/index.php?scenepainter

And theres also a yppedia page about it:
http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/ScenePainter

If you have further questions, feature requests or simply want to share
your opinions about the software, please post them in this thread.

Whats new in v2.2?
- A lot of code cleanup and documentation.
- Many improvements to usability.
- Removed support for stoneage Java installations to cut downloadsize.
- Scenes can now be exported to a central directory.
- Plugin API for extending SP by third party modules.
- Upon startup, the gamedirectory itself must now be selected instead of
"getdown.txt".
- Persistent storage of settings. No need to reselect the gamedir upon every
startup any longer.
- German translations.
- A lot of behind the scenes changes (see resources/doc/HISTORY in the jar
file for details).

Greetings,
here is a little toy for making the life of a scenepainter artist a bit
easier:

http://www.home.unix-ag.org/patrick/software/scenepainter/ypp-1.0_alpha.jar

Simply drop it in the "tools" directory of your scenepainter installation
and restart the program (note: you need at least scenepainter v2.2). This
will add two new convinience tools:

* The floorplaner will layout a NxN area with basetiles, or a border with
basetiles.

* DressUp is your personal avatar design studio, allowing you to easily
build pirates without the hassle of messing around with the resourcetree
to much.

Have fun, playing with them and report back, if you find bugs, have feature
requests or simply (don't) like them.

Ahoy,
the new version of ^^this tool is up for download.

http://www.home.unix-ag.org/patrick/software/scenepainter/ypp.jar

Please delete the alpha-version (if you use it) from your "tools" directory before
you drop in the new .jar file.

New in this version is a random generator for basetile direction in the floorplaner.

Ahoy!
The new scenepainter version 2.3 is now available.

Download link:
http://www.home.unix-ag.org/patrick/index.php?scenepainter

Whats new?
- Made the initial filechooser more assistive in finding what it is looking
for. If that does not help, the friendly developer is as lost as you are.
- Textelements:
* Added new types: Plain text and emotional text
* Speechbubbles now render much smoother and tails can be placed in more
positions.
* Using Alt+Scrollwheel in the scene will affect the taillength.
* Added the ability to use italic and/or bold fonts simply by appending
the keyword to the fontname (e.g. "monospaced, italic, bold).
- Reorganized the layout of all editors to save screen real estate. This
includes putting icons instead of text on buttons to ensure fixed width and
shifting some functionality around (if you don't find something where you
expected it to be, it is somewhere else. If it's not there either, it's
gone).
- Changes concerning the scene itself:
* Dropped the concept of scenes having a fixed size. They are now as large
as needed.
* You can now drag all elements at once by holding down the ALT key while
dragging. This pretty much obsoletes the Translocator tool which is gone
now for this reason.
* Put the scene on the background of the workspace instead of in a window,
to address the annyoing issues of window activation and overlapping.
Though the downside of this is, that whenever the scene is repainted
(e.g. whenever something is moved), any overlapping window get's repainted
as well. So if ScenePainter feels sluggish while dragging elements, try
reorganizing windows to not overlap the scene.
* Scenes no longer support clipping. If exported to PNG, the resulting
image simply is large enough to contain all elements in the scene. This
also includes elements currently "off screen" (as long as their
coordinates are positive).
* Reworked the rendering process to be much faster. This especially
affects scenes containing pictures. If things are still slow for you,
try having less windows on the workspace/covering the scene.
- Put a config submenu in the system menu.
- A lot behind the scenes (pun intended) changes.
- Fixed a bug with saving and loading outline textelements.
- Scenes are not backwards compatible. While v2.3 can of course read scenes
produced with earlier versions, earlier versions can not read v2.3 scenes
(and who said, you cannot learn from Micro$oft how to force users to
upgrade?).

Feel free to test and have fun playing with it.
Please report back if you find bugs have feature requests or simply (don't) like it.

Ahoy,
here is a nice little tool for ScenePainter...
(ScenePainter v2.3 is required. Earlier versions will not work with it).

http://www.home.unix-ag.org/patrick/software/scenepainter/punch.jar

The Punch tool allows to "punch holes" into scenes. For this, the layers
to stand have to be selected in the list and a name must be assigned.
If saved, a picture by the assigned name is created among the imported
images. This picture is composed of the layers selected to stand, punched
by the layers not to stand.

Multiple layers can be selected by holding down CTRL.

Edit: new version, same download link

Ahoy!

Sometimes our friendly developer is terrible bored. If that happens he get droll ideas...

I have been toying around a bit with jabber yesterday. For those that do not
know Jabber: It's a standardized, open source instant messanging system.
Much like ICQ, AIM or YIM, but with the advantage to be free and extandable.

That brought some memories back about an old project, some indigo players
once announced, a Y!PP movie made from screenshots. Naturally, that thing
never saw the dawn of day, as even getting a short sequence of shots from
the gameclient is beyond manageability. With scenepainter however, it's
rather simple, getting the single frames. The problem is rather working on a
single project as a team.

Now, while I'm not suggesting, that anyone should do a Y!PP movie (and most
certainly not without asking OOO for permission), I kinda wonder, if people
would use scenepainter more, if they could somehow share their work. Imagine
having a tool, that would allow you to connect to a network, offering you a
library of scene(element)s and allows you to work on a project with several
people at once (without having to zip and upload it somewhere, for your
teammates to download and install).

The question is however, if it is worthwhile to program such a thing.
Would there be enough people intrested in it and if so, how would they use
such a tool? Suggestions anyone?

Have a look at the yppedia article for more information.

Since installation is a simple un-zipping of the archive the files will be where you put them. ;) Do a search for "scenepainter.jar" (without the quotes). That should return the folder.

Uninstalling is just as simple assuming you extracted the zip into a seperate folder --> delete the folder. If you want to keep your scenes you should copy the subfolder "projects" from the directory where scenepainter.jar resides. The yppedia article tells you which files are part of ScenePainter if you had to put it in the PP folder.

Scenes are saved via the Project Properties Dialog. Just assign a name for the scene and hit the save button. If you want a PNG of the scene rendered check the box.
The subsection Folder structure gives hints about where to find which files.

You can't do it inside of ScenePainter yet. SP only enables you to get all required frames. You need additional tools to create an AnimGIF (for example ImageMagick).

For example: You create a Pirate in Walking pose. Export the scene, go to the save dir and rename the file (otherwise it will be overwritten with the next save). Back in SP switch to the next animation frame of your Pirate and export again. Also rename the new file. After a complete cycle (6 frames) you got 6 files with a frame of the walking pirate. These 6 files need to be converted and joined with appropriate tools.

Maybe someone creates a tool or toolbox to get an animated GIF from SP.

Here are some plugins for scenepainter:

Actually they are a make over of older tools and a new one for creating forumavatars.

PS: Would be nice if someone could update the yppedia page on it.

Nenya is a library used in Three Rings games like PP. (details).

The files SP is looking for usually reside in the subfolder rsrc of your PP installation.

PP usually installs in "C:\program files\Three Rings Design\Puzzle Pirates". If you changed the path during installation and you don't know where that is, search for getdown.txt. This should return the folder where PP is installed. Write that location down and open a DOS box.

Change into the folder where ScenePainter is installed (i.e. was unzipped to). Write the following:
java -jar scenepainter.jar "<path>"

But replace path with the written down location (keep the quotation marks if there are spaces in folder names).

Example with the standard installation location:
 java -jar scenepainter.jar "C:\program files\Three Rings Design\Puzzle Pirates"

arrows/nets/cbs are not part of the Nenya library. So they don't appear directly. But there are simple PNGs with the shots somewhere in the rsrc folder. These can be imported in the image tab. Maybe you need to crop them with a graphics tool like Photoshop (the explosions or water hits contain the whole sequence).

Ahoy,
I came across scenepainter and have a few questions:

1. Is it safe to use? I know, the rule of thumb is not trust random software, I just want to know, what the general experience with this program is (can it be recommended? discouraged?).

2. The scenepainter homepage (http://www.onyxbits.de/scenepainter is the correct one, right?) says, that permission to use the graphics is required from threerings, but doesn't state how/where/who to ask for permission. Is it actually nescessary to always ask? I mean, I have seen tons of YPP screenshots and other artwork on various homepages and youtube videos. Is there some fair use clause?

ScenePainter is definitely save to use. It's mainly a ressource browser for nenya sources. It won't alter any data of your PP installation (and there is no way to do so). Everything you create or alter will be saved independently in the SP folders. By the way: The source code is included in the JAR, so you can look at it for yourself.

The URL is correct.
The TOS of OOO state under "6. Restrictions" that actually the use of anything from PP is restricted. The stuff you find on the net is fanart and kind of tolerated since the creators don't make profit. (Maybe someone with more insight can shed some light here)

The disclaimer on the SP pages just points out, that you should check with OOO on the use of any creation, but I think as long you use it for events, avatars and so on you're on the save side.

Ahoy again,
next (probably stupid) questions:

1. When enabling gridlocking, it works fine with floors, somehow with walls and not at all with furniture. Well, actually it does work with furniture items, they just don't end up, where they would ingame. Am I missing something here?

2. ScenePainter seems to have quite some potential for drawing comics, according to the resources page. But the threads mentioned there are in german. Is there an english speaking thread to post artwork, that just eluded me so far?

You're not missing something. The problem is quite complex.

a) All PP scenes are actually isometric (pseudo 3D). The grid is not rectangular, but skewed (as sea battle maps clearly show). The SP grid is rectangular and the suggested values approximate the grid so tiles can be placed correctly.

b) Every sprite (tile or composite) in Nenya has a base point, which marks the "footprint" on the isometric grid. SP assumes that this point is always the most upper left point (in the rectangular grid). This is fine with tiles since they're all the same size, but doesn't work on other components.

As far as I know the author is trying to solve that problem. But it requires a redesign of the scene display.

Unfortunately there is only the german thread in the non-3R forum Opalpiraten.de for now. But feel free to start a thread in this forum.

Hi.!

I'm VERY sorry for the 1 year bump, but I have a question regarding downloading ScenePainter.

Alright, so the down load can be found here, correct?

If so, then I downloaded all the attachments there, and it went fairly fine. But when I open ScenePainter_setup_utility(that's the filename I see), It opens up the Nokia Application Installer. I think my computer has that Nokia Installer because of my father's cellphone..

But it's because of this "Nokia Application Installer" that I can't install ScenePainter..

Am I missing something or did I just do something wrong? >.<

Help please!

Yes, that's the one you want. Open it with that.

Um, one problem >.<

Yes, I opened it with that, but it opens, then suddenly closes/disappears. Any ideas why this happens? xD.

Thanks emerson, and I'm sorry for the trouble >.<

Don't worry. That used to happen to me all the time.

Try opening it with the Windows Command Processor. If you have XP, click on the Start Menu and then on "Run". When it pops up, type in CMD. With Vista, you can either do this or click on the Start Menu and start typing "CMD" - it should be the first one at the top. Now, put the Scenepainter folder into the Puzzle Pirates installation folder (C:\Program Files\Three Rings Design\Puzzle Pirates for XP, or <account name>\AppData\Roaming\Three Rings Design\Puzzle Pirates for Vista. Next, go to the folder via the Command Processor. You must go through each folder at a time, and in case you have never done this before, it should be something like this:
  • XP - "cd Program Files". Press enter. "cd Three Rings Design". Enter. "cd Puzzle Pirates". Enter. "cd scenepainter-2.3". Enter. "java -jar scenepainter.jar". Enter.
  • Vista - "cd AppData". Enter. "cd Roaming". Enter. "cd Three Rings Design". Enter. "cd Puzzle Pirates". Enter. "cd scenepainter-2.3". Enter. "java -jar scenepainter.jar".

You should then see it come up, or if you are using ScenePainter for the first time, it should bring up the resource directory finder. Did that work? I'm quite new to this, so can someone step in and tell me if I booched one of the steps up?

There is no absolute need to place ScenePainter into the PP folder. Actually you can put it anywhere you like. It just comes in handy, when you need to find it.

When entering folder names containing whitespaces you need to put them in quotes or the command will fail.

Example:
cd Program Files
fail

cd "Program Files"
works
