Checking the map for stuff already on it would be appreciated, too :)

The main islands I need data for are Nuptial and Monsoon.

Yeah, I got confirmed from Choto that she's only ever found Lilly from there. So obviously there's some big plans for lilly or something, and Nuptial will be the spawn point.

As of a few days ago, I can't access some of the links at the top of this topic. I get blank pages for these links:

Or, Lily of the Valley is considered by the Ringers to be romantic and/or matrimonial.

Some of them work fine. Others I have trouble with. I'll put all of the normal maps up on elemental soon, and think about what to do with the wallpapers, as 50megs doesn't take files the big. *insert eye rollage here*

Diamondblade, I have an old copy of the map with commodities, but I was going to ask and see if you could post it to that front post instead of having it as just a link (that and I only have it printed, and the poor thing is falling apart! =/ ), as I still have trouble reaching it, but have no trouble viewing the other maps.

Thanks muchly!

Ummm.. if they're still up there... those red Xs are my attempts to link directly. I'll put the normal maps up on elemental today, provided my cookies work fine. I don't know what to do about the wallpapers, though...

/me is still mystified where this error came from.

EDIT: Oooh, wow, they're showing up for me on the first page. If they're still not up, I'll update elemental later on just in case :)

Because I'm crazy, I've started re-hashing the map into SVG. That was a link to the spec. For more interesting (demos) information, check out Adobe's site.

Why (besides having fun, honing my skills, and contributing to society)? Searchable, text-editable, interactivity (toggle resources and stuff), scalable to literally any size you want... Maybe I'm crazy, maybe it won't be used, or worth the effort, or ultimately finished all the way. Ideally it would be stored in a CVS where any interested party could help improve it.

Right now, it's a bunch of unlabeled dots. If anyone's interested in seeing, or helping, or throwing ideas at me, please let me know. Once it starts getting useful (complete and labeled at least) I'll stick a link up.

I have incredible uses for self-generating maps. Does any browser actually implement SVG, or would it be better to just use PHP to generate image maps dynamically?

I'd love to see this. I have no problem viewing SVG files, and I love the charts that 54x has made, but I find that beyond the large ocean one, they aren't really useful - the forage one, I can't tell what the commodities are because they all look (mostly) alike, and the XL version is MIA.

The latest Adobe Illustrator reads SVG, so I can view your map. Post a link when you have it.

This ties in well with a personal project of mine: marking my fully-memorized routes on a map. This lets me compare with some mates of mine who're doing the same thing: we know who to ask for help charting a route, and you can compare your sea-lore with your friends'.

I did this by scaling one of the maps in this topic so the league points fall on snap-to-grid points in Adobe Illustrator, and drawing lines.

I've also got a second layer in the Illustrator file containing charts my memorization ship has on board, but which I haven't memmed yet.

Point is, it would be cool to be able to do this in SVG, especially if you had some PhP interactivity allowing you to switch layers and charts on and off. I could imagine a crew-wide map database: maps held by different ships and maps shown in different colors, you click on where you want to go, and it tells you if you can get there and where to find the maps you need.

It would be really cool to have a full Midnight GIS (Geographical Information System), with interlinked layers of visual information about commodities trading and foraging, routes and their difficulties, island development status and flag control, ad infinitum. But I doubt anyone will volunteer to do this.

Oh, here's my mem map. Nothing to brag about, but to give an idea.

You can find a build of Mozilla with basic SVG support built in. (I personally use the even awesomer Firefox branch of Mozilla, for which you have to compile your own Linux version to get SVG support :P ) From the Adobe site linked above you can download a plugin (for IE) that works quite well. (edit: hey! I found scrolling; hold alt)

As far as dynamic generation, I guess PHP might be the way to go. But honestly, that sounds like a pain. (I don't even want to think about what the guys ap Mapquest have going on 8| ) The Adobe plugin is nice enough, I'd say go for SVG because it's dang flexible and I think it's cool. (as in, generate SVG via some PHP code, or something to that tune) Though, if that's your aim, I'd say you're crazier than me. :D I'd also guess offhand that it'd be easier to deal with said SVG generation on the fly with a bit of perl, but I'm no expert.

I guess I'll stick a link up, even though I don't have official permission to use the space for this. (but it's small, and it won't be that downloaded, right?) Grab the Adobe viewer, and you might have to "save target as..." to get it to work. (I did) http://www.worldstageministries.org/tyrone/midnight.svg And when you do look at it, make sure you zoom in to get a very small feel for the power of SVG.

Interesting idea... I wonder what would be useful - and more importantly - how it could be updated automatically, so it doesn't require redrawing parts of even one layer to update...

I think it'd be really neat to have zone of control information on the chart.

Maybe it'd work best as a cgi script that drew the map dynamically from data files...
