'Still Teh Prettiest' Discussion Thread - Winners Announced!
Still Teh Prettiest!

Rules Clarified, Deadline Extended!

"A fine table it is, if by table mean ye a stump bolstered by iron fish. Is this a table that you'd be makin', or is it merely a new an' interestin' form of anchor? For if ye'd see this as aught other'n purposed as ballast, it needs have not just strength but looks. I've heard that cedar lionheads be most valued fer improvin' the looks of this lot."

We want the prettiest, the strongest, the best... but we are only three pirates. Which is why we are running a contest asking you, the vast and wonderful pirates of the Forums, to help us decide which GCPP Gilthead Table is 'Still Teh Prettiest'. And have we got bribes... lures... bait... temptations... enticements contest prizes for you! which include Fish! Custom named sloops! Fish! Trinkets! Fish! Fancy Atlantean Clothes! Fish! and also ... Fish.

The object of this contest is to create interesting and attractive patterns for use in our GCPP Gilthead Furnishing Puzzle proposal game. Within our game, patterns based on horizontal color bands, and vertical shape matching result in normal bonuses, but for certain special patterns (e.g. a table filled entirely with nothing but FISH!!) we want to award bigger bonuses. Sure, we could come up with patterns all on our own - and we have - but where's the fun in that?

This is the discussion thread, where you can ask us questions, cheer people on their excellent entries, and anything else outside of showing off your 'Still Teh Prettiest' table.

Show off your table on the Entry thread over here. GCPP Gilthead tables outside of the Entry thread will not be judged.

The Entry thread also has important information such as the complete Rules and Guidelines, and the breakdown of Prizes.

The contest runs from September 15- October 5. Winners announced October 12. Opal is more than welcome to participate. Entries are mostly visual. We read some German.

Have fun!
The GCPP Gilthead Team
Perlandria, Emberleo and Chiendd

... Did we mention the Fish?
ps: Still looking for a German translator to include Opal friendly versions of this and the entry thread.

'Still Teh Prettiest' Example Game Boards
Ahoy!

Since a picture is worth a thousand words here is our example of a pattern which would do poorly in the prototype because it has no straight line matches. But it is a pattern to a human. We hope you will be MUCH more sophisticated and challenging.

Now with more bandwidth!

I swear, as soon as I can log back into the Y!ppedia I am going to log in for the whole month. And hug it and love it and call it George. And take it out for a nice dinner.

If you were not able to see the examples or download the zip file, please try again. We've moved our page. If anyone is having trouble seeing the examples or downloading the zip file off the new page of http://albert.best.vwh.net/gilthead/GiltHeadContest.html, please contact Perlandria or Emberleo in PM and we'll gladly help you directly.

It is fantastic everyone was looking at the contest enough to hit the old page limits, and we apologize for the bother.

Thanks!

Due to downtime as we launched, the entry deadline has been extended a week to October 5.

By popular request, the rules have been clarified. The rules function the same. Existing entries are still valid.

For everyone, but so we can beg to see what xthelocust made...

xthelocust, your entry only exists on your computer right now. We can't see your desktop from here. And since your computer is not also a server the hosts files on the internet, we can't still see it. We'd really like to see your entry.

Seb_long_uk has already written excellent resource for how to save your entry and put it where everyone can see. It is here:

Sorry for the delay. You still have a week. I wanted to answer when I had help for you.

Worminator - is it just me or does one of your posts look remarkably similar to Pure Form (all pieces the same color and shape), that is already in the game, and the other (the one with all lions) is the same as the one that I posted as my number 4 entry, Perfect Pride...

I'm assuming that because your entries are behind links, Worminator didn't see them before he posted. No worries - you both have other entries, and we anticipated that this sort of thing might happen.

That's why the rules say "If similar entries are submitted, greater weight will be given to earlier entries."

In other words, we know yours was there first. If an award is given for that design, that will be taken into account.

I find the easiest way to play a game I want to crop is to choose Custom Parameters. If you are building a table with a color pattern, choose all the colors but limit the pieces. If you are building a table with a mostly shape pattern, choose either all the pieces, or all the pieces and the wildcards. Do not choose knots. I like to not have the rat gnaw, and to choose the 15/15/15 timing so I don't have to see it. If I am on a fast computer, I'll choose a river speed of 3. And most useful, I choose to only have ONE SCROLL.

One scroll is really useful because your table sits there, completed, until you hit refresh and get to start a new game. So you have the time to find the Print Screen button. Take a screen capture using print screen and open up any art program. Paint works, assuming you have windows.

Once you have pasted your full screen into paint, find the crop tool. It should be a little box outline selection. Select the table blueprint area from tabletop to bottom of the feet and hit control or apple C, or Rightclick Cut. Open up a new file in the art program. Paste in just the area you selected with Control P, Apple P, or right click Paste.

Save that file, and upload it somewhere we all can see it.

Better instructions on how to crop and host are here:
http://forums.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=91525

Does that help at all?

I realise you're unable to edit, but for next time try using lower case rather than upper case for the img tags. I know photobucket gives you the ability to copy the text to stick the images into a post, but photobucket uses IMG which the forums here dont seem to recognise.

Re: 'Still Teh Prettiest' Forum Contest Discussion Thread, for GCPP Gilthead
Hello folks,

Perlandria, Chien and I got together this evening to decide on the winners! We are announcing the prizes now, but they will not be available for distribution before Sunday. Also, a couple of you have decisions you need to make to let us know which prize choices you prefer!

And now, without further ado:

First Prizes:
The prize for Prettiest Design/Original Game Colors (Sloop named "Pretty Gilthead", Gold Topped Magenta Ribbon Trinket) goes to:
Maialiana for Savanah/Under The Sea
Chien and I couldn't stop arguing over which design was actually prettier, but we all agreed that this prize goes to Maialiana. We'll let you choose which colors you like better for having your sloop painted. Beautiful!

The prize for Most Functional Design/Original Game Colors (Sloop named "Functional Gilthead", Black Topped Magenta Ribbon Trinket) goes to:
PrincessKyli for Top Heavy
The concept of tapering came up repeatedly, and we like it quite a bit. Chien, our programmer and primary judge of Functionality, was specifically impressed with the nuance on the concept this design used, in noticing that the pieces are not only larger by shape, but also incrementally stronger, with the fish as the strongest piece in the game. Great job!

The prize for Prettiest Design/Alternate Colors (Atlantean outfit, Gold Topped Pink Ribbon Trinket)
AND
The prize for Most Functional Design/Alternate Colors (Atlantean outfit, Black Topped Pink Ribbon Trinket)
go to:
Kiv for Widow Queen
That's right, Kiv wins TWO Atlantean outfits, and both pink ribbons. Yes, Widow Queen happens to have been the only recolored entry, so it was guaranteed to win one of these awards. However, the specific attention to detail, background pattern, symmetry, and concept is what warranted each award separately. Fabulous!

The follow Honorable Mention Awards were each chosen by one of the judges for reasons of personal preference:
Perlandria's Choice Award (Blue Starfish): worminator for Atlantean Explorer
Chien's Choice Award (Gold Starfish): Maialiana for Savanah
Breaking Ember's Brain Award (Broken Trident Tine): Maialiana for Straight to the Point
Reading Perlandria's Mind Award (Archelon Egg): PrincessKyli for Top Heavy
Reading Ember's Mind Award (Archelon Egg): bemao for Rainbow Sculptor

The following Finished Product Awards are given for designs that we can and will implement as-is:
Feelin' Gilty (Magenta Coral): Birdmanjon for GiltEdged
With the Band (Blue Atlantean Band): Maialiana for Red Rainbow

The follow Rough Draft Awards are given for designs that have inspired us with some specific but incomplete concept to implement in our game:
Coins Concept (Sand Dollar): worminator for Glittering Gold
Tiny Toes (Sand Dollar): Maialiana for Tip Toe
Primary Colors (Sand Dollar): Saltyjane5 for Form & Function
Shape Confusion (Sand Dollar): Oceanprinces for Pychedelic

The following Naming Convention Awards are given for witty names and/or concepts:
Y!PP & Furnishing Tie-In (Gold/Black Fish & Orange/Red Fish): Kiv for Brigand King Table Series
Y!PP Tie-In (Blue/Blue Fish): worminator for "Atlantean Explorer"
Art Tie-In (Gold/Burgundy Fish): Birdmanjon for "Gilt Edged"
Art Tie-Dye (Green/Orange Bottle): Oceanprinces for "Psychadelic"

And botdudemod gets the "Got To Hand It To You" award (Zombie Hand) for combining our example patterns (Checkerboard, Fish) into one "Scurvy" concept!

And last, but not remotely least, the Grand Prize for Best Overall set of entries (Big Cat or Carven Table & Gold Mirror Trinket) goes to:
KIV!

Congratulations! So what was that about finishing out the cycle?

====================

To make things a little easier on you folks, here's the prize aggregate by Pirate. If there is a star next to your name, you have some choices to make. Please contact Perlandria via PM.

*Kiv: Big Cat or Carven Table, Gold Mirror Trinket, 2 Sets of Atlantean Clothing, Gold Topped Pink Ribbon Trinket, Black Topped Pink Ribbon Trinket, Gold/Black Fish, Orange/Red Fish

*Maialiana: Sloop named "Pretty Gilthead" painted Grey/Blue/Aqua or Orange/Yellow/Lime/Green, Gold Topped Magenta Ribbon Trinket, Gold Starfish, Broken Trident Tine, Blue Atlantean Band, Sand Dollar

*PrincessKyli: Sloop named "Functional Gilthead" painted Grey & Blue/Red/Yellow, Black Topped Magenta Ribbon Trinket, Archelon Egg

worminator: Blue Starfish, Sand Dollar, Blue/Blue Fish

Birdmanjon: Magenta Coral, Gold/Burgundy Fish

OceanPrincess: Sand Dollar, Green/Orange Bottle

bemao: Archelon Egg

Saltyjane5: Sand Dollar

botdudemod: Zombie Hand

====================

That's everything! Congratulations to everyone, and thank you very much for playing with us. We will be implementing many of your designs and ideas into our next game release, along with some nifty ideas of our own.

We did have fun playing around with designs that we can show you now that the official contest is over - including the proof that some of you really did read our minds! If you have more ideas, we are always enthusiastic to hear more so feel free to continue adding to the entry thread (after we get it unlocked again) - of course we can't promise any more prizes after this...

Thank you again, from all of us,

Re: 'Still Teh Prettiest' Forum Contest Discussion Thread, for GCPP Gilthead
Thank you Ember for all the work putting the Prize Announcement together. After my first week of work and being up for waaaaay too long now, I couldn't have done it.

Congratulations to everyone! Thank you from the bottom of my exhausted heart for playing with our GCPP concept and participating in our contest.

It was a lot of fun, as a team exercise, to see which entries Chien, Ember or I 'got' and at what level we noticed what we think you were trying to do. I really enjoyed the discussions it generated in the team, and I want to thank all of you for giving us that. To that end, ummmm we all noticed 'Psychedelic' was going somewhere but WHOAH, we weren't in the right drugs or something. I would beg everyone in general, but that entry specifically, to tell us what you were going for, and why?

Goodnight and THUD to everyone. I'll be watching PM eagerly for choices so I can recolor the sloops, etc. and get them in OM hands for distribution.

Re: 'Still Teh Prettiest' Forum Contest Discussion Thread, for GCPP Gilthead
Hi!

First, thanks so much for the sand dollar! :)

Secondly, I was going for a table that functioned well so I figured fatter pieces on the bottoms and tops and skinnier in the middle. The color scheme was just what ever came down the line as long as it was symmetrical! = )

I wasn't completely sure how the game worked and the rat kinda scared me. I wasn't sure if he was gnawing on my legs or not. I would have needed much more practice with the game to come up with better designs.

Thanks again!

Re: 'Still Teh Prettiest' Forum Contest Discussion Thread, for GCPP Gilthead
So you were aiming for legs shaped like Hourglasses? That could be useful...

One of things that jumped out at us the most when looking at your design is that you used the primary colors, specifically. We thought that was deliberate on your part, and were pleased by it. We did notice the symmetry as well, and that you were doing something with the shapes, but we were a bit unclear as to what level of complexity to look for with the specific shapes you chose.

Thank you for clarifying - it's very useful data!

That was because I never did figure out how to change the colors or shapes. I never even saw the fish or lion tiles! LOL

SaltyJane
Ah! You must have been using the beginners settings then. If so, you only had four color choices, six shape choices, and no bonus pieces or knots.

You're supposed to be afraid of the rat, by the way - that's why he's there ;)

If you have more questions about how to play the game, go ahead and post them in the development thread linked in my Sig line. It's okay to say you're confused - we need all the input we can get. If we've made the game or the instructions too hard to follow, that needs work too, and we want to know.

Birdmanjon
We will have OM assistance in our distribution when the prizes are ready.

Unless you have won awards that require making choices (which you don't), coordinating with us is not an issue.

Sit tight, it'll get to you in a few days. ;)

The last of the prizes are distributed. Everyone has everything now, to my knowledge.

And now that all the judging and awarding is over, we can show you our entries to our contest. We took a LITTLE bit of time between getting the go ahead and the start to imagine what our entries would have been. These were the basis for the Mind Reading awards.

We've loaded these to a Flikr pool, to not flood the wiki with game art that isn't specifically from the prototype, to not use the storage on our prototype host and especially so everyone can still join in.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/gcpp-gilthead/

The flickr group doesn't allow discussion, to direct people back to the proposal thread.

And so, here are my 6 entries (here instead of the Mariner's Muse thread because someone locked it (again)):
With Six You Get Fail Roll

Leadfoot

BottomHeavy

Pedicure

TopHeavy

and Bigfoot

Okay, here's mine, for the record, but I guess the rest should be posted to the GCPP:Gilthead Flickr Pool so as not to clutter up an Events thread (which I didn't think was okay? *confused*).

Last things first - this design came to mind, and I realized it was derived from from the Falchion's drop pattern turned 90 degrees.

Original: Falchion

Here's the proof bemao really did read my mind!
Original: Rainbow Diagonal

For my first recolor, I let Rainbow Diagonal fall...
Alternate: Autumn Quilt

This was purely for the fun of it.
Alternate: Mardi Gras

This one was made at Perlandria's request, to demonstrate recoloring.
Alternate: Checkers
