So then if trophy spam isn't the goal, why the release with Sea Legs? Really? What's the point?

Because the sea legs can be earned by any new player within half an hour of picking up the game. It's a nice bit of feedback for players who are new, haven't got great skills in any particular puzzle, and aren't likely to stick with one for the time it takes to get to broad.
